Full Writing Process

The following four documents represent the lengthy process of producing a polished product.  The featured assignment is my "Why I Write" reflective paper from the Writing 200 Gateway course I took junior year.  From rough draft to edited final draft, it's very interesting to see how the paper evolves into its final form.

Rough Draft

This is the original rough draft of my "Why I Write" essay for Writing 200 that I submitted to my workshop group .

Final Draft #1

After incorporating some of my workshop group's suggestions and tweaking my rough draft, this is the final draft of my "Why I Write" essay.

After submitting my initial final draft, these are the comments and suggestions that my instructor, Shelley, made about my paper.

"Joey, I really enjoy your writerly voice in this essay! I also think the decision to talk about your love/hate relationship with writing is a productive one, ultimately. I have made A LOT of comments in the margins (incuding responding to yours) in the draft attached below, and I'm looking forward to seeing where you might take this as you ready it for the portfolio. Let me know if you'd like to talk through any of these ideas."

Instructor Feedback

Once I had had some time away from my "Why I Write" paper, I took my instructor's suggestions and ran with them.  I edited my initial final draft for re-evaluation and inclusion in my W200 e-portfolio.

Edited Final Draft

Before I ever start to write, I sometimes sketch out a few ideas on scratch paper to organize my thoughts.  These notes (chicken scratch) are often no longer than a few words and serve as reminders for how I initially foresee the content of my paper being organized.  As I write, I often add a bulleted list of additional thoughts that I think should be added or given attention in the paper.
